Evergreen & Bergen Park
Maybe it’s the rolling
hillsides covered in dark pines or the majestic snow-caped mountains on the
horizon. It could be the thousands of acres of untouched mountain
wilderness, convenient shopping, a small colony of artisans, or jobs in a nearby
metro area.
EVERGREEN offers a unique lifestyle with crisp mountain air, blue skies, some
of the best mountain scenery Colorado as to offer, and a major metropolitan area
only 30 minutes away.
Once a summer hunting ground for
the Ute, Sioux and Arapaho, the area quickly changed with the discovery of gold
on Chicago Creek. The prospectors were followed by an influx of settlers
and traders. In the 1920’s EVERGREEN became a popular resort area.
Today EVERGREEN is still popular with tourists as well as commuters. It’s
a scenic mountain retreat with close proximity to the ski areas and quick access
to Denver’s conveniences. The focal point of the community is a sparkling
mountain lake that offers fishing and boating in the summer and ice skating in
the winter.
The Denver Mountain Parks System
almost surrounds EVERGREEN with about 8,000 acres of land for hiking and
cross-country skiing. A diverse wild-life population boasts of one of the
largest elk herds in the state. The Evergreen rodeo, the Mountain
Rendezvous and other numerous community activities draw people from miles
around.
Police protection is provided by
the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, which maintains a substation in
EVERGREEN. The Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department provides fire
protection for the area. Jefferson County maintains a library in
EVERGREEN, and the educational needs of the people are served by the Jefferson
County R-1 School system with elementary, middle and senior high schools in the
immediate area.
The Evergreen Metropolitan Recreation
and Park District maintains a year-round, Olympic-size swimming
pool, gymnasium, racquetball/handball courts, etc., and many outdoor
sports activities, together with numerous instructional programs
for all ages. There are also several private athletic clubs
and golf courses. The Evergreen Chorale, the Evergreen Players
and the Evergreen Artist’s Association are but a few of the cultural
and arts organizations located in the community. Medical
clinics offer emergency services and a full range of medical doctors
and specialists who practice in the area. There is a local
newspaper, a Senior citizens resource Center, major grocery stores
and a full rage of retail shops and services. RTD express
public bus transportation to Denver is available.
At an elevation of 7,040 feet,
the climate is no more extreme than Denver’s and it is often warmer in the
winter because of the shelter that the surrounding mountains provide.
The Evergreen area is reached by
taking the Evergreen Parkway exit off Interstate70 and following Colorado
Highway 74 (Evergreen Parkway). It can also be reached by traveling
Colorado Highway 74 west out of Morrison or by taking U.S. Highway 285 to its
junction with Jefferson County Highway 73 at Conifer and heading north.
